From Imperfect Books, a Perfect Solution
09 12 2016

In any large print run, a small number of “imperfect” books are to be expected. During a recent project for USAID Indonesia, StratComm printed 67 different titles and 7.5 million books in total. Due to this mammoth printing process, there were inevitably a small number of books that came out imperfect.
Instead of letting those imperfect copies go to waste, StratComm worked with our contacts at USAID to send these books to schools located in remote areas of Indonesia, including East Nusa, Tenggara, Papua, West Papua, and Maluku, where improvement in literacy is highly sought and the books would be extremely valued.
Some of these books were also donated to Ridwan Sururi’s mobile library. Through the Kudapustaka (the name of the mobile library), the books can be put into more hands. Both the New York Times and Al Jazeera have written about this unique and highly entrepreneurial mobile library.
One of the best things about libraries is the fact that so many people have access to so many books. As long as the books are properly cared for by each person who borrows them, they can last a long time and be enjoyed by many learners.
We at StratComm are so pleased by the fact that our books are able to be used in this way and continue to support the USAID mission by helping to support early grade literacy initiatives in developing countries.
